Curriculum:
PRIVATE  LESSONS  with  MASTER  ZHEN

The Shaolin Chi Mantis curriculums are composed of three separate Gongfu systems combined together:
  • Northern Shaolin Gongfu (from the Songshan Buddhist Temple)
  • Yang Style Taijiquan
  • Northern Praying Mantis (both Taiji Tanglang "Tai Chi Praying Mantis" & Qixie Tanglang "7 Star Praying Mantis")

Private lessons contain the same lessons taught in our normal curriculums. The only difference is you are paying for the teacher to teach you and you only, as opposed to a class where the teacher teaches a dozen students simultaneously.

Because Private Lesson Students will not be required to achieve Belt Rank Advancements to be taught specific weapons or Kung Fu Forms, each Private Lesson Student is responsible to learn these basics or prior lessons on their own time.

In the event a student does not know basic Gongfu stances, but wants to learn the Chinese saber, the Shifu will have to incorporate this Kung Fu basic training into your Private Lessons. There is no shortcut to wisdom.

This requires the Shifu to create a unique curriculum for each Private Lesson Student. Like any Kung Fu student, you progress based on your personal practice, more than the Shifu leading you through a one-hour lesson. It is up to you to study, practice, learn, memorize, and understand your every lesson before a new lesson can be laid atop it.

"I've taught many people private lessons over the past two decades," Buddha Zhen says scoldingly. "Americans believe that once they pay you money, you (or me, the Shifu) is under their employment. This is not correct and will not create the proper Shifu-Student relationship. Think of your Private Lesson fees as donations, gifts, and your way of saying, "Thank you," to your Shifu.

The costs may be higher for Private Lessons, but now you are taking the place of those other dozen students and prohibiting them from attending. Private lesson tuitions may also require traveling fees for the Shifu to visit you or meet at a convenient location for you.

PRIVATE LESSONS by MASTER ZHEN SHEN-LANG

Bearded Buddha Zhen Shen-Lang

Each Private Lesson Student is designed a curriculum to accomplish the "agreed to goals."

The Shifu will decide which exercises and drills are to be taught. Learn, practice and master what you learn before the next lesson.

Although Buddha Zhen will strive to teach you what you seek specifically, this may require additional basic training that you did not intend for. Take notice of the traditional, spiritual, and curriculum goals below to better understand what you will be learning. You won't be taught how to jump with a sword until you can stand on your feet properly.

TRADITION

Shaolin Chi Mantis is a traditional Northern Chinese Gongfu System. Abbot Zhen Shen-Lang of SCMThe Forms, (martial arts dances), were created in the Buddhist Temple on Mt. Songshan.

The Founder of Zen Buddhism created the first Gongfu Forms known as the 18 Luohan Movements.

Bodhidharma is the First Patriarch of Zen Buddhism and Shaolin Gongfu.

Bodhidharma created Buddhism with exercise. The techniques evolved from their original 6th Century movements into the famous 10 Shaolin Forms taught at Shaolin Chi Mantis, along with traditional Chinese weaponry.

Mind / body balance was the foundation of Zen Buddhism. Bodhidharma concluded that a Monk in better physical and mental shape would be more spiritually capable. Although Tai Chi Youth is nondenominational, Shaolin Chi Mantis, being more comprehensive, includes traditional Dharma and Daoist teachings. Shaolin Gongfu is much more than a self-defense system. Shaolin Gongfu is a way of life that strives to expand the physical, mental, and spiritual abilities of every student.

With an awareness of the above topics, you and Buddha Zhen will create a curriculum for your private lessons. Write your goals, needs, desires and expectations down on paper and submit them to Buddha Zhen.

 AGREED  TO  GOALS

An INTRODUCTORY LESSON will be required to evaluate your current level of Kung Fu ability and assess what will be needed to attain your goals.

After this lesson, the "AGREED TO GOALS" can be decided.

"DEADLINES" should also be submitted with your request for Private Lessons. If you are an actor who needs to learn how to use a sword and you have to shoot the movie in 4 weeks -- Buddha Zhen will utilize his decades of teaching experience to devise a plan to accommodate your deadlines.

 PRICE

"I have several ways of determining the price of your lessons," explains Buddha Zhen. "In Utah, I used a sliding scale based upon your gross income from last year. Sometimes for simplicity I offer my services to anyone at a flat rate at a location and time convenient to me. I usually give up to 50% discounts to students already enrolled in Shaolin Chi Mantis classes."

 SCHEDULE

RESCHEDULES and CANCELLATIONS must be at least 48 hours in advance or ONE HOUR minimum charge will be paid by student.

The same applies for the Shifu, in which case one fee hour is owed to student for next private lesson.
